IEEE Bangladesh Section Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC) in collaboration with IEEE Bangladesh Section and IEEE BUET Student Branch arranged a workshop on “Humanitarian Technology with Sustainable Development” on 25 April 2018 at ECE Building, BUET.
Rakibul Islam Chowdhury, Humanitarian Activity Co-ordinator, IEEE Bangladesh Section hosted the event. The workshop was conducted by Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah, Education Chair, IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee. Dr. Lamia Iftekhar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of ECE, North South University was also present. The session started at 5:30 PM. About 40 participants including both IEEE members and non-members participated in the workshop.
The host of the event, Rakibul Islam Chowdhury, Humanitarian Activity Coordinator, IEEE Bangladesh Section started the event by giving a brief introductory speech on humanitarian technology, IEEE HAC and its different aspects.
Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah, Education Chair, IEEE Humanitarian Activity Committee began his session by emphasizing the importance of service to the local community and encouraged students to focus on local community-based projects. He insisted on the need for the project makers and innovators to reach out to organizations like IEEE HAC and IEEE SIGHT. Before moving on to talk about the steps of developing a proper Humanitarian project, he encouraged everyone to always be enthusiastic as IEEE will provide adequate funds for any project that has significant potential. He also elucidated the link between humanitarian activities and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In the latter part of the workshop, Dr. Fattah instructed the participants to form teams of four or less to identify a problem and make their own project proposal for solving it. After about an hour’s time of discussion and planning, the teams were asked to present their proposals and Dr. Fattah attentively listened to all of them. He discussed with them and instructed every team on how to develop their project. Thereafter, all the teams were asked to write down a short description of their project. The event ended with a small token of appreciation given to Dr. Fattah from IEEE Bangladesh Section Humanitarian Activities Committee and IEEE BUET Student Branch.
