IEEE Bangladesh Section along with Women In Engineering Affinity Group as well as IEEE Power and Energy Society Women in Power organized a special session “WePower Track: A World Bank Initiative” on 4 May, 2019 on the occasion of 1st International Conference on Advances in Science, Engineering and Robotics Technology 2019 (ICASERT 2019) at East West University, Dhaka. The session began at 4:45 pm with a welcome speech and introductory session conducted by Professor Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section.
After that, the first guest speaker, S. M. Noor Uddin, Chief Executive Officer & Director of Summit Bibiyana Power Co. Limited nd Managing Director of Summit Sangu Power Co. Limited., took the stage and discussed the possibilities for the development of women entrepreneurship. He highly encouraged women to come forward with innovative ideas to start a business. His speech was followed by an interactive question-answer session. Prof. Celia added that female engineers can perform better than others in tech-related businesses as they had already gained the technical knowledge. She urged all women engineers of Bangladesh that they should engage not only themselves but also other female members in their family to entrepreneurship. In this regard, she provided examples of some business ideas such as transformers, solar lamp business etc. .
The next speaker was Afroza Afrin, an Executive Engineer from Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited. Ms. Afroza spoke about the struggles in the journey to her current position, she motivated everyone to have strong determination, an important criterion to be successful in their career. Another female engineer named Mahfuza Afroz from Power Grid Company of Bangladesh Limited also spoke at this event. She shared her experience about different power stations as she had visited most of the power plants of Bangladesh. Apart from this, she shared the story of how she prepared herself for the competitive job exam. Afterwards, Mst Sabina Sultana, who works in Grameen Shakti, inspired everyone to come up with successful start-up ideas through her speech.
A short break ensued when everybody took part in a photo session and enjoyed the refreshment. Lastly, the participants took part in a quiz competition about power and energy. The purpose of this quiz was to make this event more interesting as well as to grow the interest of the participants for working in the power sector.
The event was attended by a total of 24 people, 5 from professional organizations and 19 affiliated to different educational institutions.
