IEEE Smart City: Bangladesh perspective
IEEE Student Branch CUET in cooperation with IEEE Bangladesh Section organized a training session on “Humanitarian Technology Project Design for Sustainable Development in Local Community” on 28 June, 2018 at Operating System Laboratory, Department of CSE, CUET. Its objective was to familiarize the participants with the process of identifying local community problems and developing sustainable projects to solve them.
Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah, Professor, Department of EEE, BUET; Director, Institute of Nuclear Power Engineering (INPE), BUET; Nominations and Appointments Chair, IEEE Bangladesh Section and Education Chair, 
IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee conducted the training session. Dr. Shamsul Arefin, Head of Department, Department of CSE, CUET, Dr. Moshiul Hoque, Branch Advisor, IEEE Student Branch CUET and Conference Coordinator, IEEE Bangladesh Section and Dr. Saiful Islam, Branch Co-counselor, IEEE Student Branch CUET were present as honorable guests. The session was held for 3 hours. 100 participants including 40 IEEE members participated in the event.
The training session was inaugurated by Dr. Shamsul Arefin, Head of Department, Department of CSE, CUET. He delivered his welcome speech along with a brief introduction to IEEE Student Branch CUET.
Then Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah started the training session with a brief speech. He introduced humanitarian technology and discussed 17 sustainable development goals of UN. Then he described the funding opportunities of IEEE and IEEE SIGHT. After that, he taught the participants how to develop an idea for a humanitarian technology which focuses on solving local and common problems. He also showed some examples of implemented humanitarian technologies.
Later an interactive brainstorming session was conducted by Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah. All the participants were divided into 16 groups and they developed humanitarian technology ideas to solve local community problems. They presented their ideas and Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah gave them different suggestions on how they can improve their ideas and implement them.
The training was concluded by Dr. Moshiul Hoque, Branch Advisor, IEEE Student Branch CUET. A token of appreciation was handed over to Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah by Dr. Moshiul Hoque and Dr. Saiful Islam, Branch Co-counselor, IEEE Student Branch CUET.
