Event name: Technical Talk on Prospect In Biomedical Engineering
Venue: ECE Building, BUET
Date: 26 January 2019
Time: 3:00PM – 4:00PM
Number of participants: 120
On 26 January, 2019 IEEE BUET Student Branch in association with IEEE BDS Students Activities Committee (SAC) a technical talk on “Prospect In Biomedical Engineering, A Highly Interdisciplinary Major: Higher Studies, Research, And Booming Industries”. The event was completely free and open for all with the intention of serving the enthusiastic students with necessary knowledge in this field. With the ceaseless progress in Biomedical Engineering, the research and job opportunities are increasing widely. Therefore, IEEE BUET Student Branch and IEEE BDS SAC created this scope for the keen young engineers to provide them with a platform to explore.
The honorable speaker of the event was Sheikh Jawad Ilham who is currently a Ph.D. Candidate at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, USA. He is pursuing his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering. He has completed his BSc. in Electrical & Electronic Engineering from BUET, Bangladesh and his MSc. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT, USA. He has been a Graduate Research Assistant at Martin Han Lab, UConn, Storrs, CT, USA. He was also a Former Graduate Research Assistant at NPR Lab, UConn, Storrs, CT, USA. He worked as a Lecturer at Daffodil International University, Bangladesh. He was also an Instructor at Onnorokom Pathshala.
Initially, the participants were given a form where they expressed their expectations from the event beforehand. The talk started at 3:00 PM sharply. At first, the speaker introduced fundamental areas of Biomedical Engineering such as ‘Neural Engineering’, ‘Biomedical Image Processing’, ‘Tissue Engineering’, ‘Bio-Sensors’ etc. The area of research is vastly diverse that students from any discipline can contribute to the fastest growing field. Then, the speaker shared his research experiences of M.Sc. and current projects. Though he is a graduate from the department of EEE, he had to learn about physiology and basics of surgery for experimental purposes. He encouraged the enthusiastic participants by telling about his dream project on “Brain Computer Interface (BCI)”. He wished to work with Elon Musk who is the owner of ‘Neuralink’ that is going to play a vital role in future of Biomed industry.
About 120 participants attended the event which was a major success for the organizers, since being a relatively new field in our country, such enthusiasm was indeed bewildering. The talk was extremely resourceful for the participants who are eager to pursue their higher studies and career in Biomedical Engineering. The participants also took part in a very lively and engaging question-answer session after the main talk. Shams Shad Islam Rafi, Student Activity Coordinator, IEEE Bangladesh Section presented a token of appreciation to the speaker at the end of the event. Refreshments were arranged for all the participants as well.
The credit behind the success of this event solely goes to the organizers and volunteers from IEEE BUET Student Branch and IEEE BDS SAC. IEEE BUET Student Branch intends to organize further technical talks and seminars that are beneficial for students of diverse interests.
