

The International Symposium on Social Implications of Sustainable Technology (SympSIST-2024), jointly organized by the IEEE Bangladesh Section, IEEE SSIT Bangladesh Chapter & IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Activity Committee, and co-organized by the IEEE Khulna University Student Branch, was a vibrant showcase of innovation and humanitarian-focused technology, held at Khulna University on November 1, 2024 collocated with the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Signal Processing, Information, Communication and Systems (SPICSCON-2024). The event gathered students, professionals, and tech enthusiasts, creating an engaging platform where ideas met impact. The day began with three interactive workshop sessions, each designed to guide participants through the stages of humanitarian project design and management. In these sessions, participants learned frameworks for impactful project ideation, studied real-world case studies of successful humanitarian projects, and acquired effective management skills for project implementation. This hands-on approach helped participants turn their ideas into actionable plans. The resource persons of the workshop sessions were as follows: (1) Prof. Dr. Shaikh A. Fattah, Chair, IEEE PES HAC & SPS HAC and Professor, Department of EEE, BUET, Bangladesh, (2) Dr. Vijayalaxmi Biradar, Chair, IEEE WIE AG MP Section & Director, IQAC, Kalinga University, India and (3) Engr. Oto-obong John Effiong, Jez Power Company Ltd., Nigeria. Following the workshops, the Humanitarian Project Idea Contest and Project Exhibition highlighted participants’ creativity in addressing humanitarian challenges. In the Idea Contest, participants presented poster-based solutions focused on flood relief and support for flood-affected populations, bringing forward innovative ideas to assist these communities. In the Project Exhibition, participants showcased functional prototypes addressing a range of humanitarian issues—from healthcare and disaster response to education and sustainable energy—demonstrating practical applications of technology aimed at social good. The event also included an invigorating talk and panel discussion led by experts from academia and industry, such as, Dr. Thiago Alencar, Chair, IEEE PES Global Entrepreneurship & Big Data Engineer (Renewable Energy), Brazil and Prof. Sunitha Beevi K., Chair, IEEE SIGHT Kerala Section, India, focusing on the role of technology in advancing humanitarian efforts. This session provided valuable insights into the current trends and challenges in the field, inspiring participants to consider the broader societal impact of their work. The three workshop sessions and the technical talk & panel discussion session were moderated by Prof. Muhammad Sajjadur Rahim, Department of Information & Communication Engineering, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh and Humanitarian Activity Coordinator, IEEE Bangladesh Section. The closing ceremony was graced by Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Chair, IEEE WIE AG Global Committee, 2023-2024.
