To celebrate International Mother’s Day 2021, IEEE WIE BUET Student Branch Affinity Group, in collaboration with IEEE WIE Bangladesh Section and IEEE Stamford University Student Branch, organized a webinar titled “Women In STEM: Affection Affirmation and Altitude (AAA)” on 9 May, 2021, to signify women contributions in STEM as motherly figures.
The event was initiated at 3 PM as the Chairperson of IEEE BUET Student Branch WIE Affinity Group, Mumtahina Islam Sukanya introduced herself and welcomed everyone to the webinar with a brief acknowledgement of the mothers’ role in our life. She then introduced the speakers of the webinar to everyone and handed out the session to Prof. Takako Hashimoto to share her experience as a mother working in STEM.
Prof. Takako Hashimoto started with a brief introduction about herself and her family as well as her research background. She also shed some light on her career development process and her journey to become a global leader. She proceeded to talk about the hardest part of her journey, child rearing period, as a mother working in STEM in Japan, which is a highly traditional country and had very few women working in STEM at that time. She then ended her presentation with some advice for the younger generation on the habits to be a global leader as a female engineer.
Mumtahina Islam Sukanya, the Chairperson of IEEE BUET Student Branch WIE Affinity Group, thanked Prof. Takako Hashimoto and moved on to have Anamika Bhakta as the next speaker. Anamika Bhakta introduced herself and briefly described her journey in STEM with IEEE WIE. In her speech she put great emphasis on the importance of Planning, Strategy and Determination for women in order to be successful, as the family support system for everyone might not be the same. She ended her speech by talking about ways to fight the challenges and create opportunities for oneself in the professional world as a female engineer.
Thanking Anamika Bhakta, Mumtahina Islam Sukanya invited Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz as the last speaker of the session to share her valuable thoughts on the journeys of women in STEM. Mumtahina Islam Sukanya gave a brief introduction of Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz and handed out the session to her. Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz first explained the theme of the webinar, Affection, Affirmation and Altitude. She then proceeded to share her experience as a working mother and the struggles she faced. She shared the inspiration that she got from her mother and utilized to pave the way for female engineers. She encouraged everyone to have strong determination and be committed to reaching high ambitions as well as motivating others on the way, especially women.
At the end of the session, The Chairperson of IEEE BUET Student Branch WIE Affinity Group, Mumtahina Islam Sukanya invited questions from the participants. K M Samiul Islam shared his feelings about the importance of mothers working in STEM, as the chairperson of IEEE Stamford University Student Branch.
