Title: Celebrates IEEE Education Week 2024
Date: 20th April, 2024 (Saturday)
Time: 7:00 PM (GMT + 6 Hours, Dhaka Time)
Mode: Zoom Platform and Facebook Live
IEEE SPS Bangladesh Chapter Chair Prof. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah delivered a welcome speech via recorded video. He said that IEEE Signal Processing Society (SPS) Bangladesh Chapter celebrated IEEE Education Week 2024 with a special talk series. The event featured two distinguished speakers. The chapter highlighted its active role in organizing events. The chair shared achievements, such as teams from Bangladesh securing top positions in the IEEE Signal Processing Cup, including second runner-up in 2024 and champion in 2022. The chapter also emphasized its humanitarian initiatives, offering $3,000 funding for student projects. Gratitude was expressed to the IEEE Bangladesh Section and its chair for supporting the event. The talks aimed to inspire members to engage with IEEE SPS activities and advance signal processing research.
Speaker:
Dr. P. Vijayalakshmi
Professor & Head, Dept. of ECE
SSN College of Engineering, Chennai, India
Keynote Title: Talking Tech – enabling voice to the speechless
The talk showcases the work of the Speech and Language Technologies Lab at SSN College of Engineering, focusing on assistive technologies for individuals with speech disorders like dysarthria. The lab employs speech signal processing, automatic speech recognition (ASR), and text-to-speech synthesis (TTS) to improve communication for those with motor or neurological impairments. Addressing data sparsity, the lab uses data augmentation, speaker adaptation, and transfer learning to enhance ASR and TTS systems for disordered speech.
Practical applications include systems for individuals in workplaces or educational settings, improving employability and independence. The lab also explores silent speech interfaces using EEG and EMG sensors to decode speech from neural or muscle activity, offering solutions for severe impairments. These technologies empower individuals with speech disorders, enabling effective communication and enhancing their quality of life. The research highlights the transformative potential of technology in supporting those with speech disabilities.
Speaker:
Azfar Adib
Ph.D. Candidate, Dept. of EE
Concordia University, Montreal, Canada
Keynote Title: Anonymous Age Verification Using Electrocardiogram
He is researching the use of ECG signals for age detection. ECG, an electrical signal representing heart activity, can be measured via electrodes or smartwatches. Traditional age verification methods raise privacy concerns, prompting interest in biometric alternatives like ECG. Adi’s research leverages deep learning (CNN, LSTM) to analyze ECG data, focusing on low-frequency components and QRS identification. Initial studies using hospital ECG data showed limited accuracy, but smartwatch-collected data from 200 individuals demonstrated promising results, particularly for binary classification (e.g., above/below 25 years). The algorithm achieved 86% accuracy in distinguishing age groups. Interviews with stakeholders revealed mixed opinions, with some favoring the technology for privacy and child safety, while others preferred traditional methods. Future steps include improving accuracy, collaborating with smartwatch manufacturers, and securing a patent. This research highlights ECG’s potential as a privacy-preserving age verification tool.
The event was moderated by Engr Shohel Rana, IEEE SPS Bangladesh Chapter Treasurer & IEEE Bangladesh Section Secretary. IEEE SPS Bangladesh Chapter Secretary Dr. Mohammod Abdul Motin, Assistant Professor, Dept. of EEE, RUET; IEEE Bangladesh Section Student Activity Coordinator Dr Md Aminul Islam, Assoc Professor, Dept of EECE, MIST; Awards Coordinator Dr. M.
